Erick needed to do check in with a client at 11:30 AM. So we planned a stop at the Public Library in Nacogdoches to use the Internet. As we traveled 59 S and 259 S we pretty much had the road to ourselves.
Couldn't help noticing the red clay that's everywhere. |
About 10 miles outside of Nacogdoches, we started to get some light rain - until then the roads had been completely dry. The temperature hovered around 40 F. We arrived at the NPL at 11 AM. There we met a librarian who had just moved from Ann Arbor - small world, 'eh?
We left Nacogdoches around noon and headed to Cleveland (Texas) for a lunch stop. More rain during the trip. And the Prius reached 75K on the odometer.
At 2 PM we arrived in Cleveland and picked an eatery from the list the Garmin presented, Papa Ro's Pizza. Imagine our surprise when the menu included Khmer (Cambodian) cuisine. I ordered a soup called Pho - rice noodles with chicken, beef and shrimp in a light broth with seasonings on the side (cilantro, hot peppers, red onion and lime).
By 3 PM we were on Texas 146 heading into Houston in the rain. For awhile we were behind a truck with an oversized load headed for one of the oil refineries. It had a police escort. We're in oil country now.
Below, notice the bridge in the distance, and up close.
We entered Seabrook on the industrial end around 4 PM and headed down NASA Road 1 to the Quality Inn where we'll be staying until Sunday.
Looking forward to visiting with my sister Wendy and her husband Michael and to a couple of days of driving only a few miles each day instead of 500 or so! But, guess what the weather forecast is for tonight and tomorrow - "Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 9 pm this evening to noon CST Friday." Yep, freezing rain, sleet and maybe snow. Will we ever escape winter?!
