We took I-10W out of Houston.
Leaving the city behind |
We stopped for gas in Flatonia (the name brought to mind Dilbert cartoons) just off I-10W.
But we still made a stop 24 miles later at a Buc-ee's because Erick's niece Lorrie said it was a "must see". Talk about a full-service truck stop - the Buc-ee's has 40 gas pumps and an interior the size of a Meijer's store.
Then it was back to the open road. By 3:40 PM we were on the TX-1604 loop around San Antonio near Randolph Air Force Base.
An hour later, headed north on I-10/US-87, at 640+ feet above sea level, we felt our ears pop. We are definitely in Texas hill country. (At some places in Houston, the Garmin navigation system indicated elevations slightly below sea level.)
At around 5 PM, we pulled into Fredericksburg. A major landmark is the Nimitz Museum and Museum of the War in the Pacific - both of which we visited the first time we were here a bit less than a year ago.
